Calgary, Alberta, Canada, February 5, 2024 – Osuji & Smith, renowned as Canada’s largest Black-owned law firm, proudly announces the acquisition of the assets of Fisher Law, and the recruitment of Fisher Law’s talented and compassionate team to build Osuji & Smith’s new Immigration Division. Fisher Law is an award-winning law firm known for its robust immigration legal services. The acquisition marks a significant step in both the expansion of Osuji & Smith and the expansion of legal support for immigrants. This strategic move culminates in February, Black History Month, showcasing the significant commitment by Osuji & Smith to providing trustworthy and reliable legal services to those navigating the complexities of immigration.
Both Charles Osuji, CEO of Osuji & Smith Lawyers, and Rowan Fisher, Founder & Managing Lawyer of Fisher Law, are immigrants themselves, with a deep understanding of the intricacies and challenges faced by newcomers to Calgary, Alberta, and Canada. Their personal experiences fuel their dedication to creating an ecosystem of support, fostering success for immigrants in Canada.
Prior to the acquisition, Fisher Law’s unique approach has been integral in providing essential immigration knowledge and support to various organizations in Calgary, such as the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, The Immigrant Education Society, the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, and Immigrant Services Calgary.
Applauded for the progressive expansion of Osuji & Smith, Charles Osuji is also recognized for the founding of the non-profit Foot in the Door Initiative (FIDI), a groundbreaking, federally registered nonprofit dedicated to bridging the gap for professionals in Canada and give newly arrived, internationally trained lawyers experience in the Canadian legal system. It is a first of its kind in Canada, providing tomorrow’s legal scholars and lawyers with the opportunity to find their way into the Alberta legal community with hands-on Canadian experience in client consultation, supporting lawyers, networking across Alberta, and navigating the workplace.
“This acquisition isn’t just a business move; it’s a commitment to empower and uplift the immigrant community in Canada. By acquiring Fisher Law, Osuji & Smith will not only be expanding its services to Dubai, Yukon, Ontario, across Canada and beyond, but will also be reinforcing its dedication to trust, excellence, and support in the immigration sector. We understand the unique challenges faced by immigrants because we have lived those stories.
This acquisition enables us to create a robust ecosystem that nurtures talent, fosters opportunities and builds a foundation of success for newcomers to Canada. Together, we are not just lawyers; we are allies in the journey of every immigrant seeking a better life in this great nation.”
The acquisition, formalized on February 1, 2024, establishes Osuji & Smith’s desire to create a new Immigration Division at Osuji & Smith, with Fisher as the Managing Lawyer of the Division.
With this acquisition, Osuji & Smith boasts of delivering legal services in more than 25 major languages including Ibo, French, Edo, English, Urdu, Punjabi, Urhobo, Itsekiri, Italian, South Korean, Twi, Ewe, Japanese, Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, Yoruba, Pashto, Polish, Romanian, Russian, and Ukrainian.
“I am thrilled about this new chapter with Osuji & Smith. This is a chance to amplify the impact of our work on a much larger scale. Our commitment to providing comprehensive immigration support aligns perfectly with Osuji & Smith’s values and resources. This acquisition ensures that more immigrants in Canada have access to reliable, empathetic, and effective legal assistance.
I am excited to bring along our entire team, lead this new Immigration Division at Osuji & Smith, and continue our mission of making a tangible difference in the lives of those who, like us, have chosen Canada as their home.”
